An Unkindness of Ravens

Here's all the sketchbook work for my next fairytale print The Seven Ravens. I love the fact that a group of ravens is called and unkindness or a conspiracy.

a medieval bestiary

I posted my sketch of the Wolpertinger earlier and have now done a few more. I'm going on to make them in to linocuts, a technique similar to the woodcutting these original bestiaries would have used. First time with a new techniques, so it's pretty exciting learning new things!

Whilst researching these animals, I found out that a lot of them are actually used in some online games? My versions are a lot more sad sap than the ones in the games though! especially my leucrota... The original animals from the medieval bestiaries can be found here.

Here's a couple of pages from my current sketchbook. I'm working on a small printing project, where I'm creating my own Bestiary, like the ones found in Medieval times, but a bit more fun and experimental.
Anyway, to create these strange and bizarre creatures that populated the Medieval Bestiaries and also Jorge Luis Borges' Book of Legendary Creatures, I figured I should get to grips with drawing the original real life animals that were the inspiration.
